Recently, I was having a discussion where I found myself having to explain to a Freemason friend what it meant to be a Mason. As we were sharing some common perspectives, I also realized that our journey and perceptions of Freemasonry from the outside was very different. So here we are, let me try to shed some light on this 300+ years old organization.
Freemasonry, one of the world’s oldest and most storied fraternities, has been shrouded in mystery and intrigue for centuries. With roots that trace back to the stonemason guilds of the Middle Ages, the fraternity has evolved into a global organization dedicated to personal development, charity, and the pursuit of truth. Yet, despite its long history and noble mission, Freemasonry is often misunderstood, leading to unnecessary fears and misconceptions. As someone deeply involved in the fraternity, I want to share why it’s important to approach Freemasonry without fear and with an open heart.
The Myth and the Reality
One of the most persistent myths about Freemasonry is that it’s a secret society with hidden agendas. Popular culture has certainly played a role in this, often portraying Freemasons as shadowy figures pulling the strings behind world events. While it’s true that Freemasonry has rituals and traditions that are not publicly disclosed, these are not secrets meant to manipulate or control. Instead, they are symbolic lessons that encourage members to reflect on their own lives, ethics, and roles in the broader community.
Freemasonry is, at its core, a fraternity—a brotherhood (and I use both terms loosely as Freemasonry has lodges for men, women and both) of like-minded individuals who seek to improve themselves and contribute positively to society. The so-called “secrets” are actually symbols and allegories used to teach moral lessons, much like those found in religious texts or classical literature. They are tools for personal growth, not instruments of power.
A Place of Brotherhood and Learning
One of the most beautiful aspects of Freemasonry is its emphasis on brotherhood and sisterhood or in short, being a social human IRL. When you join the fraternity, you’re welcomed into a community of individuals from all walks of life, united by a common desire to better themselves and the world around them. This sense of belonging is profound and can be incredibly uplifting.
Freemasonry teaches its members to be better parents, companions, friends, and citizens. Through the fraternity’s teachings, members learn the importance of integrity, charity, and respect for others. These values are not exclusive to Freemasonry but are rather universal truths that resonate with people regardless of their background or beliefs.
The fraternity also provides a unique environment for learning and self-reflection. The rituals and symbols used in Freemasonry are designed to prompt introspection and encourage members to think critically about their lives. Freemasonry is NOT a religion nor proselytize for a specific religion, it’s a spiritual or philosophical framework. This is not about indoctrination; it’s about fostering a deeper understanding of oneself and the world.
Charity and Community Involvement
Another important aspect of Freemasonry that often goes unnoticed is its commitment to charity. Freemasons are actively involved in their communities, contributing to various charitable causes and initiatives. Whether it’s through fundraising for local organizations, supporting educational programs, or helping those in need, Freemasons are dedicated to making a positive impact.
This charitable work is not just an obligation; it’s a reflection of the fraternity’s core values. Freemasons believe in the importance of giving back and making a difference, and this is something that every member is encouraged to embrace.
The most visible part of this effort in the US is driven by the Shriners who give away $1.6M / day to support the Shriners Children Hospitals network and other initiatives. The say is that the Shriners Hospitals do not have an account receivable team for patients. No need.
Dispelling Fear and Embracing the Journey
It’s natural to feel apprehensive about something that is not fully understood. However, the key to overcoming this fear is education and openness. Freemasonry is not about controlling minds or pushing hidden agendas. It’s about personal growth, brotherhood, and making a positive impact on the world.
For those who are curious about Freemasonry, I encourage you to explore it with an open mind. Talk to members, attend events, and learn about the fraternity’s history and mission. You’ll find that Freemasonry is not something to be feared but rather something to be appreciated and embraced. Just make sure you carefully vet the person you are interacting with. If anyone proclaims to know the Illuminati secrets and how to get rich by entering the worldwide masonic “elites”, walk - no - run away. These are quacks and conmen. Especially if their presence is only digital and on social media. Legitimate lodges have physical places to meet called lodges and are well recognizable and recognized within their communities.
In the end, Freemasonry is a journey—one that leads to self-improvement, deeper connections with others, and a greater understanding of the world. It’s a journey that’s open to anyone willing to take the first step, free of fear and full of curiosity.
So, if you’ve ever wondered about Freemasonry, don’t be afraid to explore it. You may find that it’s not the mysterious organization you once thought, but rather a welcoming fraternity with a rich history and a noble purpose. And who knows? You might just discover a path to personal growth and community involvement that you never expected.
